Ballina Local History Collection

Ballina Library has a large Local History Collection. The collection consists of catalogued books, periodicals and maps relating to the history of the local area or written by local authors.

Other items not catalogued include: Newspapers, photographs, clippings, documents and ephemera.

The photographical collection consists of about 1,400 photographs. Some photograpgs are photocopies of originals.

Friends of Ballina Shire Libraries

Ballina Friends of the Library formed in 1981. In 1982 when Ballina Shire Council considered withdrawing from the Richmond-Tweed Regional Library to provide an independent service Ballina Friends of the Library marched in protest against the possible withdrawal. The group highlighted the Bookmobile Services in the Shire as these would have been lost.

Ballina Friends of the Library won State and National Public Relations Awards by the Australian Library Promotion Council.

1983 - First annual Book Sale was held by Ballina Friends of the Library.

1993- Ballina Friends of the Library commenced a campaign to raise funds to provide 1000 new books for the new Ballina Library. The highly successful campaign included donations of money by local individuals, clubs, organisations and businesses as well as as donations of books by publishers. The target was reached by the end of 1993.

Ballina Housebound Services

Every three weeks staff at Ballina Library chooses books, periodicals, CDs, DVDs, videos, talking books (CD and tapes) for library members who are unable to come into the library because of illness or disability. There are currently around 55 housebound deliveries.

Ballina Library has a team of about 8 people who volunteer their time and own transport to deliver requested items to library members living in Ballina, West Ballina and East Ballina. When a library member requests to have a housebound service delivery, they are asked to indicate the number of items to be delivered, type of item and their reading preferences.
